Saturday 20th June

Dave dropped us off at Lands End and after a few photos and setting our milometer to zero, the journey began.
Much hotter than expected and I was soon stripping off. Couldn’t believe the journey had finally begun…

Stopped: B&B at St Columb Major – Wheel Lodge – Trebudannon - Newquay
Cost: £45 (with breakfast)
Miles: 60
Average: 8.6
Max: Geoff 34.8 | Lynne 32.8
Weather: Warm, overcast with sunny intervals, perfect for cycling
Start: 9.30a.m
Finish: 6.30p.m
  • Only 2 detours! from Geoff - 1st one was going the wrong way out of the Lands End Car Park and the other was when we got lost but ended up finding a shorter route to St Columb Major
  • Fantastic view going downhill into Newlyn. Got a clear view of the bay, the sun was shining and the water was glinting, looking very inviting.
  • VERY hilly, either up or down, no flats. Roads very narrow with winding lanes, so no chance to get into a rhythm either going up or down, so hard work.
  • Geoff had 2 near misses. A van nearly took him out, about 1” to spare. Later, he overtook a cyclist, only to suddenly have a car come round the corner the other way. The bike Geoff overtook then decided to turn round, right into my path so I had to break sharply.
  • Bolt came off the bike, that held on Geoffs mudguard. He got out his little box of ‘bits’ and found a replacement
  • Everyone we spoke to really friendly and landlady in pub especially friendly to Geoff
  • We decided to look for a campsite after 57 miles and couldn’t believe it when we found one spot on 57 miles. Geoff went in and they said they were not open for tents for another month. Rest of the site was open. Geoff let them know we only had a small two man tent and did not need electric etc but they refused on health and safety grounds.
  • We then went on to one I had already found on Internet. When we got there they said they no longer took touring tents. Suggested we try one 5 miles away.
  • Cycled a bit further and saw a sign for B&B so decided to stop there. We were only ones there and the landlady cooked us a lovely pasta meal after we had freshened up.
